Laysan Albatross Mating Pair?

They're back!  Well they returned a few weeks ago, but one of the first time for me to see these guys on the ground in Princeville and not just flying in the air at Kilauea (Lighthouse) Point National Wildlife Refuge.  I have been told that a few are already sitting on nests and the remainder will do so in the next few weeks.

You can find my entire day showcased in a slide show of still images here:

Great Frigatebird (Iwa) Sipping Water!

Here's a sequence of images taken a few weeks ago.  The Great Frigatebird or "Iwa" will skim the river picking up water and in this case brackish water as it was close to the river mouth.  Really neat to see, but hard to capture!  This particular morning, it was very clear so lots of sun, except for this one moment!  Dark bird, dark water and dark background makes it a challenge to create any separation and makes it harder technically (AF, exposure, etc ....)

FWS Slide Show 2012

Here's a short slide show that I put together for the annual banquet that is held for the volunteers at the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge/Lighthouse. All the images were taken either at Kilauea Point or at the Hanalei Refuge (taro fields in Hanalei Valley) over the last 3-4 years. I tried to include at least one photo of each of the birds you will see as well as a sprinkling of landscapes and candid people shots. Enjoy!
